Darwin was an intelligent dolphin capable of communication. He was a close friend of Captain Nathan Bridger and Lucas Wolenczak and lived aboard the SeaQuest DSV 4600.
Early Life[]
Darwin was born to a dolphin pod in the Atlantic Ocean. When he was young he became trapped in a fishing net and was rescued by Nathan Bridger. The two became friends and were able to communicate through a sort of sign language. ("To Be Or Not To Be")
Joining seaQuest[]
In a bid to convince Bridger to take command of the seaQuest, Admiral William Noyce took Darwin aboard the ship. Bridger was outraged at the kidnapping of "his dolphin". However, we was stunned when Lucas revealed that he had developed the Vocorder, a system that translated dolphin sounds into English. This allowed him to speak to Darwin like never before, though the Vocorder could not always produce a perfect translation. Later, Darwin proved instrumental when he assisted in tagging a pirate submarine, enabling the seaQuest to lock onto it and destroy it using torpedoes. After that mission, the seaQuest became Darwin's home and the crew his "pod". ("To Be Or Not To Be").
One of the Crew[]
Darwin spent much of his time in the lab, though the ship was equipped with a series of water-filled tunnels. This effectively gave him free-reign of the ship and allowed him to visit a pool on the Bridge and Lucas in his quarters. He also had a specially designed scuba pack that allowed him to breathe underwater for extended periods, permitting him to feed and to assist in missions.
Background[]
Darwin was voiced by Frank Welker. The dolphin on screen was in fact an elaborate animatronic puppet rather than a live animal.
